Party like you're 5

We just had a bit of family over for Max's birthday.
For the first time, he actually tried to blow out his candles!
And, he actually ate cake and ice cream!
Yep, he's actually growing up ;)

Before school, Piper insisted on giving him his presents from her. She also sewed him a pillow.

The cake. I decided to do the Temple Run 2 app logo. He's obsessed with Temple Run 2. Not sure if he recognized what the cake was, but his cousin thought it was really cool :)

This is huge too - he's sitting at the table with my brother! He used to be terrified of my brothers and would cry and hide in his room if they were over. Another sign of maturity :)

The family party was the day before his actual birthday, so we save a couple of presents for the real birthday. We gave him a new tent bed and nursery rhyme dvd.

Grandma Joan and Melody & Fred sent money, so we got another Geotrax remote control train engine and more track. He loves these! And I'm so bummed they stopped making them. I got the last one at ToysRUs. Good thing there's always Ebay.

Happy 5th Birthday, Max !!

Happy birthday to the cutest 5 year old around! I can't believe Max is 5.

F-I-V-E
That's kindergarten age for pete's sake!!!

He has come soooo far this last year.
Last year on his birthday I was disheartened that he hadn't progressed much at all. He had even regressed a little. He was only saying 'da' for daddy, and a couple of meaningless sounds, mostly guh and buh. He wasn't signing much either. He was very happy, but just didn't seem to get much of the world around him. More details on what he was doing a year ago HERE.

What a difference a year makes (and a whole lotta therapy).

He wanted to look thru the camera screen to see the cards, so that's why his face isn't in this video ;)

And although many of his words sound the same, he is actually saying something!! Granted, he needs a prompt to speak usually, but he is making progress and being more spontaneous as well. And he's started pointing a lot more, and taking our hand to show us what he wants (usually the tv). Huge steps for him!
He says guh for milk - I think it started from trying to say the ending k sound? and he says bobby instead of mommy, but I'll take it!

He seems to have made great strides in cognition as well, like being to follow simple directions. Last year I was doubting that we would get this far. But he's doing it!

At five years old, Max weighs 45 pounds, and is about 46" tall.
Hid favorite food is french fries, but he's a pretty good eater all around.
He is obsessed with two Signing Time episodes - Potty Time, and Box of Crayons, as well as a random nursery rhyme video.
His ABA therapists are just starting the potty training process. He has peed in the toilet once.
He knows many of his colors and will sign them. And knows about 75% of his ABC's. He can't say certain sounds like s , z, and f, and I still suspect he's got a bit of apraxia.
He loves the iPad, especially Temple Run 2, and we don't go anywhere without it.
He still loves his sister to pieces, and is loving the new dog, too.
He still hates haircuts, but he is actually getting better at cooperating for diaper changes.
He has such a big personality and makes us laugh every day.

Sheesh - he can't believe he's 5 either!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAX!
WE LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH!!

and so do your birthparents, Melody and Fred - they always send a beautiful card telling you how much you are loved and missed! and this year, you didn't eat your birthday money that was in the card ;)

Lola

So we named her Lola. Her official AKC name is Royal Flush Liberty. They called her Libby. I didn't get the whole story, but we know she's 3. The breeder was finding her a new home from a guy whose living situation had changed and couldn't keep her any longer.

This is her puppy picture from the breeder's website:
All at once now... "Awwwww!"

We surprised Piper.
We really had no intent of getting another dog, or any pet, anytime soon. But for some reason (I blame this post) we decided that if we were going to get a dog, now would be a good time since we aren't going to do the addition on the house. And dogs are good for kids, right?! So I happened to look online in the local classifieds, and saw the ad for her. I told Steve I found a free bulldog (free - ha - can't wait for the vet bills to start piling up). He said he'd be interested in going to look at her, and, well, the rest is history.

She was/is in heaven!

Piper picked out a new harness and leash.

Max is intrigued. He thinks she's pretty funny when she chases stuff in the yard. Sometimes he just walks by her and slaps her behind. Hmmm. We're working on that. When we tell  him to be soft, he goes and gives her a kiss.

The best thing about her... she has yet to get on the couch or a bed!!! And, she poops in pretty much the same two spots in the yard - next to the fence, not in the middle.
Good dog.
